Announcing the C4SS News Widget
Posted by Mike Gogulski on Jun 5, 2010 in Odds & Ends • 11 commentsFollowing the “release early; release often” philosophy, I’m pleased to announce the first release of the C4SS News Widget. Early, yes; I already know there are some bugs, including the lack of transparency around the rounded corners. Often? We’ll see.
You can see the widget at nostate.com, its first official deployment into another website, or here on the C4SS News Widget page up on that fancy second line of menu bar I created earlier. Instructions for adding it to your own website (or, prospectively, a website which used to belong to someone else, but which you’ve righteously homesteaded after they abandoned it) are included.
Your bug reports are most welcome in the comments.

Garry, thanks for the report! Somehow the clickability got lost in my last build. Fix incoming.
Ok, I've updated it and the titles and excerpts are now clickable. For some reason, the "freeze animation when mouse enters" capability was lost in the process. Bothersome.
The embed code shouldn't need updating, all I did was replace the .swf file here. Hit ctrl-f5 or whatever on the other site, or otherwise try to make your browser re-fetch the swf rather than using a cached version.
ok, I have tried various things, no luck. You can see the embed for yourself if it helps at http://www.archerreport.com/ on the right side, down towards the bottom.
Thanks for your patience, Garry. Turns out I needed to add "allowScriptAccess='always'" to the embed code. It wasn't working on my own site either.
Fortunately I have the Flash 10 debugging version installed, so a popup showed me the error.
Grab the new embed code and give it a shot.
That did the trick. Good work Mike. Thanks
Hooray!
cool widget, I think the first thing to fix though is making the news headlines clickable to bring you to the C4SS site.
Mike,
I see it works here on the site. Did you update the embed code? From the site I have it posted on, still not clickable.
Thanks! I've added it to the Molinari Institute homepage.
A new version of the widget, written in pure javascript, is now available at http://c4ss.org/c4ss-news-widget
