Not all of these people were bureaucrats, some were family members of the people murdered in Katy?, some were public figures only indirectly involved with politics (such as the Solidarity hero, Anna Walentynowicz). Personally, I felt sad over the loss of so many lives, even if many of the people on board were bastards - but the ridiculous pomp simply did it for me. I can understand grief over a tragedy like this, but the over-the-top reactions turned my sadness in to anger.

As for Kaczynski, as far as politicians go, he was of the worst kind - a nationalist, homophobic freak, a USA-loving warmonger, an anti-libertarian on pretty much every issue. If you count up all the deaths he'd been responsible for, directly or indirectly, I'm sure the number would rival that of those who died in the plane crash. And yet, many people I know wept for him, even though they had passionately hated him earlier.
What is most sad to me is that nobody gives a flying f*ck when peope die in Afghanistan or Iraq or because of police brutality, homophobia, misogyny, or even natural disasters - but people like Kaczynski, who have contributed less than nothing to the advancement of humanity are hailed as though they were Caesars.
But, well, as they say:
All that was forgotten once he took his final breath

Excellently put. I have been thinking the same sorts of things about this whole event, with a sick feeling in my stomach reading about the blatant worship of these deceased politicians. I often wonder if such starstruck submission is an inexorable part of human nature, and lament that the evidence for such a perspective pops up with such alarming regularity.
