great essay. this articulately expressed something that I have been attempting to get across to people for a long time. but even though this hints at it, the question still remains: What the fuck do we do?

obviously a mass general strike or some sort of grand revolution is not at all realistic, and as was suggested above we desperately need to change our culture. but it will be a slow and arduous process. but in our day to day lives HOW do we do it? I would like to see more articles on C4SS that addresses the actual practicalities of making this change. perhaps an article like "Why I Don't Shower Seven Days a Week" or "Ditch Detergent: Doctor Bronner's Works Just As Well" (not that Dr. Bronner's isn't a commercial entity, but it is certainly more responsible environmentally and socially than almost every other company out there), or lists of worker owned-and-operated businesses and co-ops, lists of the companies with the worst labor conditions and largest users of sweatshop labor, information on thrift shops and patching and darning old clothing, or tips about re-using and re-purposing things in general instead of buying more shit, practical DIY repairs and projects to help save money and reduce consumption, home gardening, etc. also having a propaganda section with things like stencils would be awesome so we can perhaps repair our worn clothes with patches that more succinctly convey the same messages we are communicating in articles such as these. I know a lot of this stuff is out there on other sites, too, but I think it would make us a lot more effective if we could work on concentrating it all here.

this site makes a lot of convincing arguments as to WHY we should and MUST reduce consumption and dismantle capitalism and the consumerism which props it up. now lets work together to figure out HOW we actually CAN do it.

"Giacosa concluded that since in America, workers had jobs that anyone could learn to do in a few hours, job security was non-existent and the worker was considered to be as disposable as a shovel, that Americans only had their material possessions left to take pride in. “The Americans accept the inequality of labor in order to attain a relative equality of goods”, said Giacosa."

Insightful.

Just a formatting recommendation: the paragraphs are huge!

I nominate Frederick Winslow Taylor as the arch-nemesis of C4SS. Like an anti-Mascot.

"regulation can at least manage the more destructive aspects of consumerism."

Regulation is great, but the state isn't good at it. Private regulators like Underwriter's Labs or the Environmental Working Group are not monopolistic and thus provide a higher standard of service.

This:

"People value free time over material goods. Therefore, there are major propaganda efforts to reverse this. One reason over a trillion dollars a year is spent on marketing in the USA is to try to undermine our natural tendency to want free, liberated time." - Noam Chomsky
